OVERVIEW
What it is
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a flexible, very tough pressure pipe. Because it comes in coils, long runs go in with few joints, and it follows the ground instead of fighting it. Our certified HDPE range is made in PE100, a higher-strength polyethylene grade.
WHY SPECIFY IT
- FlexibleFollows trench contours and tolerates ground movement without cracking.
- Fewer jointsLong coiled lengths mean fewer joints, and fewer places for leaks.
- Corrosion-freeDoesn't rust, scale or corrode, even in aggressive soils.
- Light and toughEasy to carry and lay by hand on remote sites, and resists knocks during backfilling.
APPLICATIONS
Where it's used
Water supply
House connections, standpipes and village supply lines.
Borehole lines
Rising mains and delivery lines from borehole pumps to tanks.
Irrigation
Pressurised irrigation mains and sub-mains on farms.
Livestock water
Long rural runs from boreholes and dams to troughs.

HANDLING AND INSTALLATION
Good practice on site
General guidance for storing and laying HDPE pipe. Always follow the project specification and the relevant installation standard.
- Store coils flat, or on edge with support, on level ground clear of stones and sharp objects.
- Keep the coil strapping on until the pipe is laid out, and uncoil with care: coils can spring open.
- Don't drag pipe over rough ground or sharp edges. Lift it.
- Limit storage in direct sunlight; cover long-term stock.
- Use the jointing method the project specification calls for; welded joints should be made by trained installers.
Which class do I need?
Pick a class above the highest working pressure in your line, including pump pressure and surge. Class is the working pressure in bar at 20 °C: Class 6 is rated to 6 bar, about 60 m of head. Tell us the pump and the run and we'll recommend one.
HDPE or LDPE?
Our certified HDPE is PE100 pressure pipe, made to SANS 4427-2 from Class 6 to 20, for water supply, boreholes and pressurised irrigation. LDPE is softer, cheaper pipe for low-pressure irrigation at Class 3 or 6.
How is pipe sized?
By outside diameter (OD). A 110 mm pipe measures 110 mm across the outside in every class. A higher class has a thicker wall, so the bore is a little smaller.
Do you deliver?
